| Description du revers | The reverse of the host coin features a large armillary sphere at centre, rendered in fine detail with meridian bands and a diagonal ecliptic crossing the globe, flanked on either side by a crowned cross of the Order of Christ. The surrounding legend reads SUBQ·SIGN·NATA·STAB·, a well-known Portuguese colonial motto referencing the Southern Cross and imperial stability. The entire design is enclosed within a beaded border with a milled edge. This reverse is characteristic of the Brazilian colonial 160 Réis coinage struck under Maria I and Pedro III, and retains clear detail despite the subsequent countermarking applied to the obverse. |
