This two-ounce gold proof continues the St George and the Dragon series that has anchored Royal Mint bullion and collector output since Benedetto Pistrucci's original design was adopted in 1817 — a design so politically loaded at the time that Pistrucci, an Italian, was blocked from engraving the coronation medal precisely because foreign artists were barred from that commission. The Royal Mint has never let go of it since.
The .9999 fineness is a relatively recent standard for this series, a step up from the traditional crown gold alloy that defined earlier sovereigns and their multiples for centuries.
