| Reversbeschreibung | The reverse features a medallic portrait of Christopher Columbus in low relief within a circular medallion at the left of the field, depicting a draped bust facing slightly left. To the right stands a detailed architectural rendering of the Columbus Tomb within the Cathedral of Santo Domingo, shown in an ornate Gothic and Baroque facade with prominent spires. Below the portrait, a laurel wreath encloses the centennial dates 1877 and 1977. An inscription beneath the cathedral reads TUMBA DE COLON CATEDRAL DE STO. DOMINGO. The circumferential legend CENTENARIO DEL HALLAZGO DE LOS RESTOS DE COLON arcs around the upper field, while the denomination 200 PESOS appears prominently along the lower margin, flanked by ornamental devices. |

Piedfort coins — struck at twice the standard planchet thickness — have historically served as presentation pieces and die trials rather than circulation currency, and this Dominican issue is no exception. The 1977 date places it squarely within the Balaguer era, minted ahead of the planned inauguration of the Columbus Lighthouse in Santo Domingo, a project that had been in political limbo since its original proposal in 1923.
The claimed discovery of Columbus's remains is itself contested. Both Seville and Santo Domingo assert possession of the authentic remains, and no scientific consensus has resolved the dispute — making the commemorative premise of this coin as unresolved today as it was at striking.
