The South American Bank Note Company operated out of Buenos Aires and supplied the majority of Argentine federal issues during the 1890s — a deliberate policy choice to keep printing contracts domestic rather than ceding them to the established North American and European firms that dominated the region. Their output for the Banco de la Nación Argentina at this denomination was relatively limited in volume, and the 200 Pesos occupied an awkward commercial position: large enough to be unwieldy in ordinary trade, but not reserved for the interbank transactions that the highest denominations served.
Argentina was still absorbing the financial wreckage of the 1890 Baring Crisis when this series circulated. The Banco de la Nación itself had only been founded in 1891, replacing the collapsed Banco Nacional.
