Issued to mark the 85th anniversary of the Romanian Patriarchate, established in 1925 when the Orthodox Church of Romania was elevated from metropolitanate to patriarchate following the country's post-WWI territorial consolidation. The first Patriarch, Miron Cristea, would later serve simultaneously as Prime Minister during the royal dictatorship of Carol II — an overlap of ecclesiastical and state authority rarely matched in modern European history.
The .999 fineness places this outside Romania's earlier gold coinage traditions, which typically ran at .900.
