Obverse description A dynamic full-length figure of a Maroon — a fugitive slave and freedom fighter — strides boldly to the right across a rocky, tropical ground, raising a machete aloft in his right hand and holding a conch shell or horn in his lowered left hand. A palm tree rises in the left field behind him, while tropical foliage fills the right field. The legend REPUBLIQUE D'HAITI curves along the upper periphery, and the inscription LE MARRON DE SAINT-DOMINGUE arcs along the lower border, all within a beaded inner rim. The composition is rendered in high relief with a mirror-polished proof finish.
