This piece commemorates the 1791 slave rebellion that began at Bois Caïman and culminated in Haitian independence in 1804 — the only successful slave revolt in history to produce a sovereign nation. The "Revolt of Santo Domingo" designation reflects Haitian usage of the colonial-era name for the island rather than the post-independence geography.
