Reverse description The reverse depicts a waving Greek national flag rendered in high relief, with the nine horizontal stripes and the white cross on the canton reproduced in fine detail using a textured matte finish contrasting against the polished field. The date '1978' — the year the contemporary flag design was formally adopted — is inscribed in the upper field above the flag. The year of issue '2021' appears in the lower central field beneath the flag. An olive branch garland, a classical Greek motif symbolising peace and glory, frames the lower portion of the design. The engraver's monogram is visible in the lower left area of the field.

Additional information

Issued to mark the bicentennial of the Greek War of Independence, which began in 1821 when Greek revolutionary forces rose against Ottoman rule. The 200-year commemoration prompted an unusually broad Greek state minting program in 2021, spanning multiple denominations and themes across both gold and silver issues.

The flag itself has a contested early history — the exact sequence of designs adopted by various revolutionary factions between 1821 and the eventual standardization remains disputed among vexillologists and Greek historians alike.
