| 正面描述 | The obverse presents an allegorical composition after the original Dupré medal design of 1782, depicting Minerva — symbolizing France — helmeted and armed with a spear, interposing her lily-emblazoned shield to protect the infant Hercules, representing the young American republic, who is seated upon a military shield and strangles two serpents with his bare hands, alluding to the American victories at Saratoga (19 October 1777) over General Burgoyne and at Yorktown (1781) over General Cornwallis. A menacing British leopard recoils at left, repelled by the goddess's intervention. The exergue and field bear the dates 17 19 OCT . 1777. and 1781., along with the engraver's signature DUPRÉ F and the issuer's mark RF 2023. The encircling legend, drawn from Horace's Odes, Book III, reads NON SINE DIIS ANIMOSUS INFANS. |
