The legend VICTORIA LIBERTATIS VINDEX arcs prominently around the upper field, proclaiming victory as the defender of liberty, while the exergue records the historical event: FVGATIS CAPTIS AVT CAESIS AD COWPENS HOSTIBVS XVII . JAN . MDCCLXXXI, commemorating the routing, capture, or slaying of the enemy at Cowpens on 17 January 1781. The face value 200 EURO and the engraver's signature DUPRE INV ET F are also present in the field, the latter denoting Dupré as designer and maker of the original work. |
