Beschrijving voorzijde The obverse presents a composite allegorical design evoking the Age of Discovery. At center-left, a wind rose (compass rose) is depicted, its cardinal points rendered with fine detail, while crossed navigational lines radiate across the field. To the upper right, a stylized sea creature or marine bird is shown in flight, and to the lower left, a rocky coastal landmass or glacial formation is depicted in relief. The Portuguese royal shield, bearing the traditional quinas and castles, appears in the lower right field, flanked by the engraver's signature E. BYRNE at left and the mint mark INCM at right. The curved legend REPUBLICA PORTUGUESA arcs along the upper rim, with the date 2000 at the top center and the denomination 200 ESCUDOS inscribed along the lower rim.

Beschrijving keerzijde The reverse features a detailed depiction of a Portuguese caravel under full sail, rendered in fine relief on the right side of the field, its masts, rigging, and hull faithfully rendered in the style of late 15th-century vessels. To the left, a stylized outline map of the Labrador region of northeastern North America is shown, with a heraldic eagle or coat-of-arms device visible upon it, and a small mounted figure appearing at the upper portion of the landmass. The curved legend TERRA DO LAVRADOR arcs along the upper and left rim, while the dates 1491 and 1500, separated by raised dots, are inscribed along the lower rim, commemorating the period of Portuguese exploration of the region.
