The "Partilha do Mundo" — Division of the World — commemorates the Treaty of Tordesillas of 1494, by which Spain and Portugal negotiated a line of demarcation splitting the undiscovered world between them along a meridian 370 leagues west of the Cape Verde Islands. The treaty was brokered under papal arbitration and remains one of the most audacious territorial agreements in diplomatic history, dividing continents neither party had yet seen.
