| Opis awersu | The crowned arms of Portugal occupy the upper central field, flanked by the legend REPUBLICA PORTUGUESA and the date 1498 above. In the lower field, the Triton carrying the Goddess Dione is depicted in relief, an allegorical scene drawn from Luis de Camoes's epic poem Os Lusiadas, evoking the voyage to India. The denomination 200 ESC and the year 1998 appear in the exergue. The composition is rendered in a neoclassical allegorical style consistent with Portuguese commemorative coinage of the era. |

| Opis rewersu | A Portuguese carrack sails to the left toward the island of Mozambique, commemorating Vasco da Gama's arrival on 2 March 1498 during the first Portuguese voyage to India. To the left, a traditional native sailing vessel (dhow) is depicted on the open sea. The legend MOCAMBIQUE and the engraver's signature E.BYRNE along with the mint mark INCM appear in the field, while the arrival date 2 DE MARCO 1498 is inscribed in the lower portion of the reverse. The design is executed in a detailed, historically evocative style characteristic of the Portuguese Discoveries commemorative series. |
