This piece belongs to Portugal's long-running series of gold commemoratives honoring the Descobrimentos — the Age of Discovery — issued through the 1990s and into 2000. Magellan's circumnavigation, completed in 1522 under Elcano after Magellan himself was killed in the Philippines, was a Castilian-sponsored expedition, a point Portugal has historically preferred to absorb into broader Iberian maritime glory rather than dwell on.
The .925 gold fineness is slightly below the .9999 or .900 standards more common in bullion and commemorative issues internationally, a choice INCM maintained consistently across the Descobrimentos series.
