| Obverse description | At right, the crowned coat of arms of Portugal is prominently displayed alongside the denomination. At left, a detailed depiction of the sailing vessel Victoria, the sole ship to complete the first circumnavigation of the globe, shown under full sail. The design commemorates the historic voyage begun by Ferdinand Magellan and concluded under the command of Juan Sebastián Elcano. The engraver's signature S. MACHADO appears in the field, along with the mint mark INCM and the year 2000. |

| Additional information |
This piece belongs to Portugal's long-running series of gold commemoratives honoring the Descobrimentos — the Age of Discovery — issued through the 1990s and into 2000. Magellan's circumnavigation, completed in 1522 under Elcano after Magellan himself was killed in the Philippines, was a Castilian-sponsored expedition, a point Portugal has historically preferred to absorb into broader Iberian maritime glory rather than dwell on.
The .925 gold fineness is slightly below the .9999 or .900 standards more common in bullion and commemorative issues internationally, a choice INCM maintained consistently across the Descobrimentos series.
