The Kookaburra gold series occupies an unusual position in the Australian bullion market — unlike the Kangaroo series issued under the Royal Australian Mint's federal mandate, the Perth Mint produces these under a Western Australian government guarantee, a jurisdictional distinction that occasionally confuses newer collectors. The kookaburra design changes annually, a deliberate policy introduced to discourage melting and stimulate collector demand alongside the standard bullion buyer.
