Macedonia's banknote series has always been printed abroad — the country has never operated its own security press — and Thomas De La Rue has held the contract for much of that history. This 2016 issue is a late-run replacement print of a design that has circulated with only minor modifications since the mid-1990s, a notably long run for a denomination in active everyday use.
Lasko Djurovski designed the original series following Macedonian independence in 1991, an unusual circumstance in which a single designer shaped the visual identity of an entirely new currency from scratch.
