The Gambia has issued lunar series coins since the 1990s, marketing them primarily to collectors in Asia and through international distributors — the coins have no meaningful domestic circulation given that 0.566 g of gold represents a denomination wildly disconnected from ordinary Gambian commerce. The rectangular format places this piece in the credit-card-shaped bullion and collector segment that gained traction in the 2000s, with several small sovereign issuers adopting it to differentiate their lunar offerings.
