Fridtjof Nansen crossed the Greenland ice sheet in 1888 and later came within 272 miles of the North Pole — a record at the time — but his greatest achievement may have been administrative. As League of Nations High Commissioner for Refugees after World War I, he created the Nansen passport, a internationally recognized travel document that allowed stateless persons to cross borders at a time when most had no legal identity whatsoever. Over 450,000 were eventually issued.
The Gambia has no geographic or historical connection to Nansen; this is a bullion-adjacent commemorative produced for the collector market, a common revenue strategy for small nations with nominal minting programs.
