The Poznań International Fair, founded in 1921, was one of the few Central European trade exhibitions that survived both the Nazi occupation and the subsequent communist period — though in heavily managed form. By 1991, the fair's 70th anniversary coincided with Poland's first years of genuine post-communist economic opening, giving the commemorative unusual political resonance without anyone needing to say so explicitly.
Trial strikes in nickel for this type were produced at Mennica Polska as pre-production approval pieces, never released for circulation. The issued coin appeared in silver.
