Sterkrade was an independent industrial city in the Ruhr when this note was issued — it merged into the newly created city of Oberhausen just two months after the hyperinflationary peak of late 1923, meaning the Stadt Sterkrade as an issuing authority effectively ceased to exist almost immediately after producing notes of this denomination. The 200 Million Mark figure, staggering by any earlier standard, was already losing relevance by the week during August–September 1923, when wholesale prices were doubling roughly every few days.
Notgeld of this magnitude was purely functional stopgap currency, printed to meet payroll in the coal and steel industries that dominated the region.
