Diplomatic relations between the DPRK and China were formally established on October 6, 1949 — just days after the founding of the People's Republic of China — making 2019 the nominal seventieth anniversary. The timing of this issue is politically pointed: Kim Jong-un made his first-ever foreign visit to Beijing in March 2018, ending years of near-total diplomatic freeze, and North Korean commemorative silver output in the years immediately following that reconciliation skewed heavily toward Chinese-themed subjects aimed at the collector export market.
