Kazakhstan declared independence in December 1991, but the new nation continued using Soviet rubles until November 1993, when it was effectively forced out of the ruble zone after Russia tightened control over ruble supply to former Soviet republics. The entire first coin series — including this piece — was introduced over a single weekend, with tyin-denominated coins entering circulation alongside the new tenge on November 15, 1993.
