Kazakhstan's first national coinage series, issued in 1993, came just two years after independence from the Soviet Union. The tenge itself was introduced on November 15, 1993 — a date now observed as Currency Day in Kazakhstan — replacing the Russian ruble at a rate of 500 rubles per tenge as Moscow's monetary union collapsed around its former republics.
The series was struck at the Banka Państwowego mint in Warsaw under contract, as Kazakhstan had no domestic minting capacity at the time.
