Beschrijving voorzijde Obverse mule featuring the youthful right-facing effigy of Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah wearing a traditional Malay songkok headgear and military-style collar with a decorative medal at the neck. The portrait is rendered in high relief with fine detail to the facial features and costume. The circumferential legend reads 'SULTAN HASSANAL BOLKIAH' with a raised dot stop, notably absent the regnal numeral 'I' customarily following the sultan's title. The legend is positioned along the outer rim, with the inscription reading upward on the left and downward on the right relative to the portrait.

Aanvullende informatie

The "without numeral 'I'" variety arose from an obverse die prepared before the convention of appending the regnal numeral to Hassanal Bolkiah's title was standardized — a bureaucratic inconsistency that persisted across multiple years of production rather than being caught and corrected at first striking. The mule designation compounds the interest: this piece pairs that non-numeral obverse with a reverse not originally intended for it, making it a production pairing that should not exist by any intentional design decision.

Brunei's coinage from this stretch was produced under contract at the Singapore Mint following independence from British monetary arrangements in 1967.
