João V ruled Portugal for 43 years, and Angola's copper coinage of this period was produced specifically for colonial circulation in Portuguese West Africa — not as an afterthought, but as a deliberate monetary policy to supply a territory where Portuguese metropolitan coinage was chronically undersupplied. The Lisbon mint struck these under royal warrant, with the colonial destination marked from the outset rather than diverted from domestic supply.
The KM#5 type spans five Gomes die varieties (J5.05 through J5.09), differences observable in the crown punch and lettering spacing.
