| Obverse description | The obverse presents an extreme close-up, high-relief portrait of an African lion's face rendered in a dramatic, naturalistic style, the animal's piercing eyes, broad muzzle, and dense flowing mane filling virtually the entire field. The composition is frontal and deeply sculptural, exploiting the mirror-like proof platinum surfaces to create a pronounced interplay of light across the textured fur and mane. At the lower centre, the South African coat of arms is contained within a small circular cartouche.
