The Mahdist state issued coinage under the authority of the Khalifa Abdallahi, who succeeded the Mahdi Muhammad Ahmad after his death in 1885. By 1895, the theocratic regime was under sustained military pressure from Anglo-Egyptian forces advancing from the north, and the treasury was in chronic disorder. Billon — a debased silver alloy — reflects the fiscal reality of a state that could not consistently source quality metal.

The KM#26.2 variety is distinguished from KM#26.1 by the absence of floral ornaments in the field. The Mahdist series as a whole remains poorly documented in terms of die counts and mint output, with Omdurman as the sole production facility until the state's collapse at the Battle of Omdurman in 1898.
