Obverse description The centre-left field is occupied by a large oval guilloche vignette, while the bank's heraldic arms — supported by two stags and bearing the motto 'FIRM' — appear in an intaglio-printed roundel to the right. The denomination 'TWENTY POUNDS STERLING' is printed in bold letterpress across the centre, with the branch date line 'EDINBURGH' and the signature of the Managing Director below. The note is printed in shades of purple and green with a fine lathe-work underprint throughout.

Reverse description The reverse carries a large vignette of Brodick Castle, Isle of Arran, rendered in a detailed engraved style within a purple colour scheme. The bank name and denomination appear in the upper corners, with the caption 'BRODICK CASTLE' printed in small lettering at the lower right.
