Bradbury Wilkinson printed Scottish commercial banknotes for decades from their New Malden works, and this series is among the last major commissions they completed before the firm was absorbed by American Bank Note Company in 1990. The Charles Winter signature dates this issue to his tenure as Chief General Manager of RBS, a period that preceded the bank's significant expansion through acquisition in the late 1980s.
Watermark-only security on a £20 note was already conservative by early 1980s standards — metallised threads were becoming increasingly common on UK issues of comparable value by this point.
