The circular legend KLEINGELDERSATZMARKE (small change substitute token) is inscribed around the upper portion of the inner field. An inner rope or twisted-cord circle encloses the central area, where the large numeral '20' appears in raised relief. Three five-pointed stars are evenly spaced at the lower portion of the inner border as decorative separators. |

Spiegelau sits deep in the Bavarian Forest, and the timber industry there was substantial enough by the early twentieth century that private firms occasionally issued their own emergency coinage — Notgeld — to manage wage payments and canteen transactions when official small change was chronically scarce. Ernst Petzold Jr.'s wood-processing operation was one such firm. Zinc was the practical choice during and after the First World War, when copper and nickel had been redirected to the war effort.
