This token was issued by the Convent of the Merciful Brothers (Barmherzige Brüder) in Reichenbach — a Catholic nursing order whose German institutions operated hospitals and care facilities largely outside the mainstream monetary economy. Such establishments routinely issued their own internal scrip to manage transactions within closed institutional grounds, preventing currency from circulating freely among patients and staff. The punched hole is functional, not decorative: tokens of this type were commonly strung or suspended to prevent hoarding and simplify accounting.
