Obverse description Octagonal zinc notgeld token with a continuous pearl border following the eight-sided periphery. A raised beaded circle in the central field encloses the large numeral '20' denoting the denomination. The circular legend between the pearl rim and the beaded circle reads 'SPRENGSTOFF A.-G.' at the top and 'NÜRNBERG' at the bottom, separated by small floral ornaments. The overall design is plain and utilitarian, characteristic of German Kleingeldersatz issues of the early 1920s.

Additional information

Nürnberg Sprengstoff A.G. was a German explosives manufacturer, and like many industrial firms during the First World War and its aftermath, it issued its own emergency coinage — Werksgeld or factory token money — to pay workers when official small change was effectively unavailable. These pieces circulated exclusively within the factory economy, redeemable at company canteens and stores. Zinc was the material of necessity; copper and nickel had long been requisitioned for the war effort.
