Issued as part of Banco de México's long-running commemorative silver series tied to the quatercentenary of Cervantes' novel, first published in 1605. The 400th anniversary prompted a wave of official commemorations across the Spanish-speaking world, and Mexico's mint contribution was this oversized onza-class piece. KM#704 is one of several Quijote-themed issues the series produced in that period, which creates some collector confusion around the precise emission dates and mintage limits for each individual release.
