Obverse description The obverse bears the Mexican national coat of arms in high relief against a mirror-like proof field, depicting the heraldic eagle perched upon a prickly pear cactus growing from a rocky outcrop, grasping a serpent in its beak and talons. The eagle is rendered with fine feather detail on its outstretched wings, facing left in the traditional Aztec manner. A wreath of oak and laurel branches frames the lower portion of the design, tied at the base. The curved legend ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS arcs along the upper periphery in bold Latin characters.

Reverse description The reverse features a dynamic scene rendered in the distinctive calavera (skeleton) style of Mexican printmaker José Guadalupe Posada, depicting skeletal figures of Don Quijote astride his horse Rocinante and his squire Sancho Panza on a donkey, charging across the field with lance raised, accompanied by additional skeletal figures in animated poses below. The design is set against a polished proof field with frosted relief. The legend DON QUIJOTE DE LA MANCHA arcs along the upper periphery, flanked by decorative dots, with the engraver's name J.G. POSADA and the mintmark Mo appearing in the upper central field. The denomination $20 is inscribed at the bottom center, and the commemorative inscription 1605-400 ANIVERSARIO-2005 curves along the lower periphery.
