The Isle of Man's platinum proof issues of the 1980s were produced in tiny quantities for the collector market by Pobjoy Mint, which held the striking contract for Manx coinage and aggressively pursued precious metal variants at a time when platinum proofs were still a novelty in numismatics. The 1985 date places this during Raphael Maklouf's newly adopted effigy of Elizabeth II, introduced that year across Commonwealth issues — the third portrait, replacing Arnold Machin's version used since 1965.
