Waterlow & Sons produced this series for Macau during the final year of the Second World War, when the territory occupied an awkward position — a Portuguese enclave that had managed to stay nominally neutral while surrounded by Japanese-controlled territory. That neutrality came at a price: Macau was effectively blockaded and economically isolated for much of the conflict, making the practical circulation of new note issues deeply constrained.
The "S" suffix in the Pick reference denotes a specimen. Whether regular issued examples from this date survive in meaningful numbers is an open question.
