Egypt in this period operated as an Ottoman province under Muhammad Ali, who had consolidated power after the chaotic aftermath of Napoleon's withdrawal. These small silver fractions were struck at Misr (Cairo) using the toughra of Mahmud II, the reigning sultan in Constantinople — though effective authority in Egypt had already shifted decisively to Muhammad Ali, who would eventually go to war against the very empire whose name these coins bore.
The extremely low weight reflects Egypt's debased provincial coinage of the period, not the heavier Ottoman standard maintained in Constantinople.
