| Obverse description | Frontal busts of Justin II and Empress Aelia Sophia seated side by side on a double throne, both facing the viewer in imperial regalia. Justin II, on the left, is depicted wearing a loros and crown, holding a globus cruciger in his right hand; Sophia, on the right, wears an imperial crown and loros, holding a sceptre surmounted by a cross. The imperial couple is rendered in the hieratic, stylized manner characteristic of mid-sixth-century Byzantine coinage. A cross or star may appear above the throne in the field. The surrounding legend reads D N IVSTINVS P P AVG in Latin capitals. |
