Justin II's joint coinage with Aelia Sophia was a deliberate political statement — the empress appears on imperial bronze at a frequency unmatched by most of her predecessors, reflecting her genuine influence over court affairs during a reign increasingly destabilized by Justin's mental deterioration. By the early 570s he was reportedly subject to violent episodes, and Sophia effectively co-governed alongside the general Tiberius. The Thessalonica mint, one of the western Balkan production centers, served a region under sustained Avar and Slavic pressure throughout this decade.
