20 Nummi - Justin II and Aelia Sophia Nicomedia

Justin II's joint coinage with Aelia Sophia is one of the more unusual dynastic statements in Byzantine numismatics — Sophia's inclusion on the imperial coinage reflected genuine co-rulership, not ceremonial flattery. She effectively governed during Justin's recurring episodes of mental breakdown in his later years, periods so severe that contemporaries described him as raving and requiring physical restraint.
