Justin II's joint coinage with Aelia Sophia is one of the more unusual dynastic statements in Byzantine numismatics — Sophia's inclusion on the imperial coinage reflected genuine co-rulership, not ceremonial flattery. She effectively governed during Justin's recurring episodes of mental breakdown in his later years, periods so severe that contemporaries described him as raving and requiring physical restraint.
Nicomedia's mint, operating as officina output under the "NIK" signature, was one of several provincial mints reactivated under Justinian I and continued under Justin II. The DOC range I#104-115 covers multiple officinae across those twelve years.
