Ankara University's Faculty of Agriculture, founded in 1930 as the first modern agricultural school in Republican Turkey, was central to Atatürk's drive to modernize rural Anatolia — a project treated with the same ideological urgency as industrialization. The faculty pioneered research into dryland farming techniques suited to the Central Anatolian plateau, a problem of genuine national importance given how little of Turkey's interior receives reliable rainfall.
