Al-Khwarezmi, the 9th-century mathematician working under the Abbasid caliphate in Baghdad, gave algebra its name — the word derives directly from the title of his treatise Al-Kitāb al-mukhtaṣar fī ḥisāb al-jabr wal-muqābala. The word "algorithm" is a Latinized corruption of his own name. Turkey's ongoing commemorative silver program has drawn from Islamic scientific history before, and this issue continues that thread.
