Beschrijving keerzijde The reverse is devoted to the bicentennial commemoration of the Norwegian mathematician Niels Henrik Abel (1802–1829). The central field is divided by a vertical line, with the left half displaying an abstract depiction of an elliptic curve and geometric constructions referencing Abel's pioneering work in mathematics, and the right half featuring a facsimile of manuscript pages from his mathematical writings. The denomination 20 KR appears in bold lettering to the right of centre, with the honoree's name NIELS HENRIK ABEL inscribed in a horizontal legend below, and the birth and death years 1802 and 1829 placed in the lower right quadrant.

Aanvullende informatie

This coin was struck to commemorate the bicentennial of Niels Henrik Abel's birth. Abel was born in 1802 and died in 1829 at twenty-six, leaving behind work on elliptic functions and his proof of the impossibility of solving the general quintic equation by radicals — a problem that had occupied mathematicians for over two centuries. The Norwegian government had previously honored him on the 500-krone note.

In 2002, Norway also inaugurated the Abel Prize, an international mathematics award modeled on the Nobel, funded in part through the bicentennial anniversary push.
