| Description du revers | The reverse is devoted to the bicentennial commemoration of the Norwegian mathematician Niels Henrik Abel (1802–1829). The central field is divided by a vertical line, with the left half displaying an abstract depiction of an elliptic curve and geometric constructions referencing Abel's pioneering work in mathematics, and the right half featuring a facsimile of manuscript pages from his mathematical writings. The denomination 20 KR appears in bold lettering to the right of centre, with the honoree's name NIELS HENRIK ABEL inscribed in a horizontal legend below, and the birth and death years 1802 and 1829 placed in the lower right quadrant. |

This coin was struck to commemorate the bicentennial of Niels Henrik Abel's birth. Abel was born in 1802 and died in 1829 at twenty-six, leaving behind work on elliptic functions and his proof of the impossibility of solving the general quintic equation by radicals — a problem that had occupied mathematicians for over two centuries. The Norwegian government had previously honored him on the 500-krone note.
In 2002, Norway also inaugurated the Abel Prize, an international mathematics award modeled on the Nobel, funded in part through the bicentennial anniversary push.
