Transylvania operated under a distinct administrative structure within the Habsburg system, and its coinage was struck at the Hermannstadt (Sibiu) mint — one of the few mints in the empire drawing silver directly from nearby Transylvanian mining operations in the Carpathians. The 20 Kreuzer denomination was introduced as part of Maria Theresa's sweeping monetary reforms of the 1750s and 1760s, which aimed to rationalize the chaotic patchwork of coinages circulating across her territories.
The Hermannstadt mint's output for this type spans only five years before consolidation reduced provincial minting activity.
