Franz I had already ruled Austria under two different imperial titles by the time these were struck — first as Holy Roman Emperor Franz II until that institution was dissolved under Napoleonic pressure in 1806, then as hereditary Emperor of Austria, a title he had pragmatically created for himself in 1804 in anticipation of the collapse. The 20 Kreuzer denominations of his reign were workhorses of everyday commerce in the Vormärz period, circulating across a patchwork of Habsburg territories with wildly different local economies.
The .583 fineness was a deliberate step down from earlier Austrian silver standards, a fiscal adjustment the treasury never fully advertised.
