| Descrizione del dritto | Central field bears the arms of Lucerne — per pale argent and azure — displayed within an ornately scrolled oval cartouche adorned with foliate and floral garlands. A cherub head (angelhead) appears at the base of the cartouche. The encircling Latin legend reads MONETA NOVA REIP . LUCERNENSIS . I T, the initials I T referring to the engraver Jean Thiébaud. The overall design reflects the decorative Baroque heraldic style prevalent in Swiss cantonal coinage of the mid-eighteenth century. |

Lucerne struck this issue under its own cantonal authority during a period when the Swiss Confederation's monetary system was a deliberate tangle — each canton maintaining sovereign coinage rights, producing denominations that overlapped awkwardly with their neighbors'. The 20 Kreuzer sat in an uncomfortable middle denomination, widely used in cross-border trade yet never fully trusted outside Lucerne's own market sphere.
The HMZ 2-655e designation places this among a small cluster of varieties distinguished by subtle die differences documented by Halter and Divo. Wielandt's Luzern catalog, still the specialist reference for this canton, lists #167 with comparatively modest surviving populations in collectible condition.
