Ukraine's National Bank has issued several design generations of the 20 hryvnia note since independence, with P#138 representing the most current production run. The serial numbering format and security thread specification on this generation were updated partly in response to counterfeit pressure on earlier issues, a recurring concern given the note's high-velocity role in everyday retail transactions.
Cotton substrate on Ukrainian hryvnia notes has been sourced domestically since the Malopidgirtsi paper mill in Khmelnytsky Oblast came online as a secure supply chain priority — reducing the wartime vulnerability of depending on foreign banknote paper manufacturers.
